Johannesburg - Wits won a second successive PSL match 1-0, taking down visitors Ajax Cape Town at the Bidvest Stadium on Friday night.

The victory was secured by another goal from Robin Ngalande, who also netted in the victory over Golden Arrows prior to the international break. The result sees Gavin Hunt’s side move up to fourth on the table.

Wits settled the quicker of the two teams, but it was Ajax who had the first genuine chance at goal, with Nathan Paulse winning a knock-down in the 11th minute that was volleyed on target by Lebogang Manyama, only for Moeneeb Josephs to make a sharp save.

On 37 minutes Ajax goalkeeper Brandon Petersen denied both Sibusiso Vilakazi and Benjani Mwaruwari at his near post after the former had skilfully skinned Cecil Lolo down the left by-line, while six minutes later he made a fine diving save to push Vilakazi’s long range shot out for a corner kick.

The opening goal duly arrived for Wits early in the second half. Denver Mukamba provided a teasing cross from the right flank and Robin Ngalande slid in to finish from close range in the 51st minute.

Ngalande only lasted another quarter hour in the match before succumbing to what looked like cramp in his right calf. Wits coach Gavin Hunt brought Miguel Timm off the bench to replace the Malawian attacker.

Ajax had used all three of their substitutes by the 73rd minute, with coach Muhsin Erturgal introducing Aidan Jenniker, Keagon Dolly and Michael Kwong off the bench. Dolly tried his luck from long range in the 75th and forced a decent save from Josephs in a rare threatening moment from the visitors.
