Tinkler on why Meyiwa played

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates interim coach Eric Tinkler has explained his decision to persist with out-of-form goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Meyiwa was in-goal for Pirates as they played to a to a goalless against Ajax Cape Town in an exciting PSL clash at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday night.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder cited in a televised post-match interview that Meyiwa is still the team’s first choice ‘keeper despite some erratic recent performances.

He also stated that the 26-year-old‘s poor form was due to personal problems off the field.

“Senzo is still our number one, we must understand that,” said Tinkler.

“Not taking anything away from (Fatau) Dauda, but Senzo has done well for the team but has had a bad patch including his personal problems.

“I spoke to him about it and I asked him to rest for two games then I told him I will need him for the Ajax game and I kept my word.

“I also spoke to Dauda about this and he understood and he is also supportive,” added Tinkler.

Prior to Tuesday night’s clash, Meyiwa last featured for the Happy People against Mamelodi Sundowns in a 1-0 defeat two weeks ago before being stretched off injured.

He retained his place between the sticks which led to Ghanaian international, Dauda, being relegated back to the bench despite having a good game in a 1-0 defeat to Polokwane City over the weekend.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
