Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates interim coach Eric Tinkler has revealed that his team will be out to make amends for the past two seasons, as far as the Nedbank Cup opening round is concerned, when the Buccaneers face ‘underdogs’ Tornado FC in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup.
The defending champions were drawn against Tornado FC in their opening round of the R6m competition to be played at the Orlando Stadium.
The former Bafana Bafana midfielder said the Soweto giants will try to avoid the blunders endured in the past two seasons against “minnow” teams.
Pirates lost 4-1 to Maluti FET College in the last 32, under Roger de Sa, back in February 2013 and also had to fight a hard battle against National First Division (NFD) outfit Thanda Royal Zulu last season. Pirates won on penalties following 3-3 stalemate.
Tinkler hinted that it is also significant for the Sea Robbers to triumph as they aim to defend their title.
“Our expectations are that we don’t slip up like we have done in the past,” said Tinkler .
“Two seasons ago, we slipped up against Maluti FET College and last season we almost slipped up against Thanda Royal Zulu.
“And now we can’t allow that to happen again.
“It’s very vital because obviously we want to defend our title.
“It is important to do so because at Orlando Pirates we win trophies.
“And this is an opportunity for us to redeem our season.”
The date for this clash is yet to be confirmed.
