Tinkler backs Meyiwa

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates interim coach Eric Tinkler says they still rely on goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa despite some erratic performances from the 26-year-old shot-stopper.

The Umlazi-born Meyiwa was substituted in the 65th minute following Hlompho Kekana’s thunderbolt strike from outside the box which helped Mamelodi Sundowns defeat Pirates 1-0 at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

Meyiwa was substituted after sustaining an injury while trying to save Kekana’s shot.

It signalled the long-awaited debut for Ghanaian, Fatau Dauda, who joined Pirates in July last year from Ashanti Gold FC of Ghana.

According a report on the Kick-Off website, Tinkler said Pirates supporters must remember Meyiwa’s heroics in last year’s CAF Champions League campaign instead of lashing out at him.

Tinkler also added that the matter will be resolved internally without the media’s presence.

Saturday’s league defeat was the Buccaneers’ fourth in the current campaign and leaves them languishing in seventh spot on the overall log.

Their next game will be against Free State Stars at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Wednesday night.

Kick-off is scheduled for 19:30.
