Teko relieved with title win

Johannesburg - Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise has revealed that at some stage he believed that he was adding bad luck to his current team, saying that his former teams have won trophies after he had stopped playing for them.

Modise spoke following his club's PSL triumph this season, the first for seven seasons.

The 'Navigator' expressed his delight at winning the first piece of silverware of his career, as he helped the Brazilians to their sixth PSL crown.

Modise took the South African football fraternity down memory lane as he highlighted that his former teams, SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates, started winning trophies after he was no longer with them.

The 31-year-old left United in June 2007 for Pirates and as a result, Matsatsantsa went onto clinch three consecutive league titles.

After leaving the Buccaneers, they too went onto become more successful, winning a treble in both the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons respectively.

Modise would be forgiven for thinking he was cursed as he would go onto be part of Carlos Alberto Perreira's team at the 2010 Soccer World Cup as Bafana Bafana became the first host nation to fail to qualify for the knockout stages, this after Modise won the 2009 PSL footballer of the season.

"I am delighted to win the league title for the first time," said Modise.

"It has been hard for me not winning any silverware in my career despite playing for big teams.

"It was also hard for my mom who has always been emotional, but she remained supportive.

"At some point I believed what people were saying on social networks, that bad luck follows me wherever I go.

"Considering the fact that SuperSport won the league three times when I was already gone and Pirates also won two trebles after I left them for Sundowns.

"Now am happy that I will go home and see my mom as a champion," added 'The General'.

Modise had a tremendous season with the Brazilians and has won himself a nomination for the PSL players' player of the season award, alongside Sibusiso Vilakazi of Wits and Willard Katsande of Kaizer Chiefs.

The winner of this accolade stands to take home R150 000.

The PSL awards ceremony will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Sunday evening at 20:00.

Starting time is at 20:00
