Cape Town - Former Kaizer Chiefs captain and defender Tefu Mashamaite is training alongside Frank Lampard and David Villa at New York City FC, with the hope of securing a contract with the MLS franchise.
Images appearing on social media appeared to confirm the rumours that the 30-year-old is trying to impress the new MLS franchise by participating in a 10-day trial.
Following his release by Chiefs, it has been reported that Mashamaite is looking to continue his professional career in the US with the added bonus of furthering his studies at the same time.
Last season, Mashamaite helped Amakhosi secure a League and Cup double (Absa Premiership and MTN8) and went on to win several awards at the end of the 2014/15 campaign after a standout campaign personally for the former Wits defender.
The former Amakhosi defender walked away with the 2014/15 Footballer of the Season, Absa Premiership Player’s Player of the Season and the Absa Premiership Defender of the Season.
He won a total prize money of R450 000.
At the Chiefs awards, Mashamaite was crowned Player of the Season and Vodacom Fans' Player of the Season.
