SuperSport hold on win over Pirates

Cape Town - SuperSport United managed to protect their overnight 1-0 advantage and walked away with maximum points against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday afternoon.

As it happened: SuperSport v Orlando Pirates

Michael Boxall gave United the lead following a David Mathebula free-kick. The New Zealand international found the back of the net with the easiest of finishes.

The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, but had to be suspended after an hour of play owing to technical issues.

The remainder of the game was played the following day with proceedings starting at 12:00.

Pirates had no time to sit back as they were trailing 1-0 and their intentions were made known very early as Issa Sarr was spotted by Patrick Phungwayo, but the midfielder's headed effort was taken comfortably by Ronwen Williams in goal.

The tempo was high and SuperSport were on the back foot as Kermit Erasmus powered into the box before forcing Williams into a good save as the game approached the 80th minute.

Matsatsantsa were holding on for dear life as Oupa Manyisa also set-up Siyabonga Sangweni in the 80th minute but the defender blasted his shot over the bar.

The hosts continued to press for the equaliser deep into stoppage time and Williams produced a fine double save to deny Erasmus and Menzi Masuku in the dying moments of the game ensuring the Tshwane outfit walk away with maximum points.
