Cosmos frustrate SuperSport

Polokwane - Jomo Cosmos held SuperSport United to a 0-0 draw in an Absa Premiership match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday night.

It is a fifth successive draw for Ezenkosi, and a third game without a win for Matsatsantsa. The former remain bottom of the log, while the latter are placed fifth, now a full seven points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

The first half saw little goal mouth action as both teams struggled to find an attacking rhythm. The only notable chance was a 40th-minute free kick from United’s Tebogo Langerman that forced a good save out of Cosmos goalkeeper Abisai Shiningayamwe.

Cosmos were dealt an injury blow at the end of the first half when veteran midfielder Mark Haskins was forced to withdraw with what looked like a hamstring strain, allowing for the introduction of promising youngster Broderick Burds.

SuperSport dominated proceedings after the break but their attack was strangely toothless, hardly testing Shiningayamwe. Coach Gavin Hunt attempted to rectify this when he introduced Sibusiso Zuma and Franklin Cale round the hour mark.

Ironically it was defender Mario Booysen who almost broke the deadlock in Matsatsantsa’s favour in the 78th minute, sending glancing header just wide of the far post from Sameehg Doutie’s corner kick.

Just under 10 minutes later Cosmos almost scored a goal out of nothing, as a flick-on from Phethego Maebela almost looped over Ronwen Williams and into the net, but the ball drifted just wide of the far post.
