Sundowns held at home

Pretoria - Platinum Stars have scored a late equaliser to hold Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in a PSL match at Loftus on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilians looked to be on course for a second successive win at the start of the season after Dove Wome put them ahead 13 minutes into the second half, but an 80th minute reply from Robert Ng’ambi saw Dikwena force a deserved draw.

Both sides created early chances from which they should have claimed the lead. Sundowns’ Dove Wome drove a powerful low shot just wide of the target in the fourth minute, while Siphelele Mthembu clipped the outside of the woodwork at the opposite end of the field just a minute later.

Once the defences settled down, scoring opportunities were a lot harder to come by and it was no surprise that the half ended with the teams still deadlocked at 0-0.

Robert Ng’ambi had the only other notable chance of the first half, finding himself in space on the left side of the penalty area in the 40th minute, but his shot was deflected wide of the near post for a corner kick.

Thirteen minutes into the second half the Brazilians opened the scoring thanks to a goalkeeping howler from Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Wome drove an effort on target from a free kick, and the Stars goalkeeper made a mess of what should have been a simple save, allowing the ball to skip off his hands and find the net.

With 10 minutes to play Stars got a deserved equaliser.

A corner kick saw Mthembu hit the woodwork for a second time, but the loose ball was put back into the danger area and Ng’ambi was able to out-jump Alje Schut and direct a header home from almost on the goal line.
