Sundowns eye top spot

Johannesburg - Mamelodi Sundowns' attitude will be key when they take on Ajax at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday as they have an eye on claiming top spot in the Premiership, said coach Pitso Mosimane.

Depending on other results on the evening, the Chloorkop outfit could briefly occupy the top spot in the competition.

"You need that hard work and hard running in addition to technique and quality to win games," Mosimane said.

"You also need the right playing attitude, the winning attitude.

"When you combine all of these, you get results."

Complacency has been common-place in the Sundowns squad, that has not lifted the Premiership trophy in five years.

"In modern football, and you can look at teams like Real Madrid and Chelsea, you will see lots of quality and lots of technique," he said.

"But you cannot only rely on these attributes."

Sundowns will head to Cape Town in search of nothing but a win, and Mosimane was confident his side could do the business.

They were in third place on the table on seven points, three behind log-leaders SuperSport United, while Ajax had one point to show from their opening three league fixtures of the season.

"We believe that we have the quality to win against any team in our league," Mosimane said.

"Now we must work on the other aspects of our game, because if we do not do that, teams that might not have the same quality but rely on their work ethic and will to win may beat us."

The former Bafana Bafana coach said he was pleased with the first three games in the campaign where he fielded nine new players.

Mosimane, however, was quick to point out it would still take considerable time before the team was the finished product.

"We don't have that luxury, though, and we know that the team has to hit the ground running," he said.
