Sundowns clinch Charity Showdown

Atteridgeville - Cuthbert Malajila netted a brace to help Mamelodi Sundowns clinch the annual Charity Showdown following a 3-1 win over Ajax Cape Town in the final played at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Malajila grabbed an early lead from a Lebohang Mokoena’s corner kick as early as the 9th minute, to put his team ahead.

The action packed first half produced more goal-scoring chances for both teams, but with Sundowns enjoying more ball possession.

Pitso Mosimane had fielded a completely different team to the one that defeated University of Pretoria 2-0 in the semi-final match earlier in the day.

With Sundowns in control of the game, Ajax got the back into the game with Mario Booysens putting the ball in the back of his net from a Franklin Cale’s free kick.

However, Ajax’s celebrations did not last long as Anthony Laffor put Sundowns back in the lead with a well taken header, as this time Malajila turned provider, as the match approached the half-time break.

In the second half, Sundowns continued with their dominance though they squandered more chances to increase their led.

However, the same could not be said for Ajax, who also fielded a different team to the one that defeated Jomo Cosmos in their semi-final match.

Roger De Sa’s side were not as instrumental as in their semi-final match, where they won by 2-0 goals against Jomo Cosmos.

They did however created goal-scoring chances that seemed to be getting the best out of Kennedy Mweene in goal for Sundowns.

The Tshwane side then showed their dominance by increasing their lead in the 68th minute with Malatjila showing his scoring abilities with a well taken shot from a good ball provided by Siyanda Zwane.

With the game settled for Sundowns, Mosimane made use of the opportunity to give other members of his big squad a chance to play making five changes at once with ten minutes to go to the final whistle.
