Chiefs and Stars in stalemate

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs could not break Platinum Stars down as their match at the Rand Stadium ended 0-0 on Saturday night.

Chiefs were disappointing in attack, while Dinaledi were excellent in defence in a match which will be remembered more for Amakhosi owner Kaizer Motaung's birthday celebrations than the action on the pitch.

Chiefs striker Sthembiso Ngcobo took the first real shot of the game in the eight minute, but his left-footed strike from the edge of the box soared over the bar.

Nine minutes later Mandla Masango followed suit, also firing one in too high. And midway through the half the Chiefs forward had another opportunity but his effort was kept out by Stars goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Knowledge Musona got in on the action with half an hour on the clock, but he too fired it over the crossbar, and the sides went into the break all square.

Stars returned in the second half with more intent, and Mbulelo Mabizela took their first real chance in the 55th minute, although his shot was well caught by Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune.

The hosts had another flurry of wasted chances, highlighted by a header from Musona in the 76th minute that flew wide. A number of free kicks were also wasted as the fans in the stadium started to realise it was not going to be Chiefs' night.

With five minutes remaining, Stars sub Bradley Grobler fired one in from 20 yards out, but he missed right.

Henrico Botes also had a headed chance in the dying minutes of the match, but his effort floated wide of the target, keeping the scores at 0-0 come the final whistle.
