Santos crumble against Aces

Cape Town - Mpumalanga Black Aces have come back from a goal down to defeat Santos 2-1 at Cape Town Stadium on Thursday evening in their National First Division play-off match.

Vuysile Wana drew the first blood in the game for the home side in the 51st minute, but goals from Thabo Qalinge and Diyo Sibisi sealed the tie for Aces in a match where Santos were left ruing their missed opportunities.

Black Aces came into the game on the front foot having taken three points off Chippa United in their opening match of the National First Division play-offs, but Santos knew that all was not lost having acquired a point off their first game.

The home side got off to a promising start when Edwin Sitayitayi made an impressive run up the right flank before unleashing a dangerous cross into the box.

Vuyisile Wana burst into the box trying to get on the end of it, but Bafana Nhlapo did well to rush off his line and make the save.

Wana was in the thick of things two minutes later when he lobbed the ball towards goal from range, while Demo Touray was called into action in the 15th minute from a corner-kick which he tipped over the bar.

A steady attacking flow between each team took place up until the half hour mark of the game in which Nhlapo had to catch a looping ball off Sitayitayi’s cross.

As the half drew on Santos started to gain more possession and they threatened through Nasief Morris’ 35th minute snap-shot which fired agonizingly wide of the post.

Santos took just six minutes after the restart to grab the lead when Wana connected to the end of Salaam King’s cross to head the ball into the back of the net.

Aces’ response was immediate when Thabo Qalinge got the better of a complacent backline and slotted the ball into the back of the net in the 59th minute

With a bee in their bonnet, Aces went on to take full advantage of Santos’ rattled mentality when Qalinge provided the assist to Diyo Sibisi’s headed goal just six minutes later, making it 2-1.

Ian Palmer’s men were once again left ruing their missed chances when Wana sent his diving header off Darron Omaticus’ cross narrowly over the goal frame.

Santos did try to force their way back for a draw but it was to no avail as they ended the match 2-1.

The victory means that Aces now top the play-off pool on six points while Chippa United and Santos remain equal on a point each.
