Cape Town - SuperSport United and Polokwane City will battle for a place in the last-16 of the Nedbank Cup when they meet at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

SuperSport, the 2012 Nedbank Cup champions, reached the quarter-finals last year before they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Kaizer Chiefs. However, they have already tasted cup success this season, having won the 2014 Telkom Knockout.

Matsatsantsa defeated Free State Stars, Bidvest Wits, Orlando Pirates and Platinum Stars to lay their hands on South Africa’s ‘League Cup’ and hand coach Gordon Igesund his first piece of silverware since taking over at the Tshwane club.

As for Polokwane City, they bowed out of last year’s Nedbank Cup in the last 32 round after a 1-0 defeat to Golden Arrows, and suffered the same fate in the Telkom Knockout earlier this season when they lost to Pirates.

This will be the first cup meeting of the two teams, though they have clashed three times in the PSL. United have one win to their name, while the other two matches have ended in stalemates.

The teams’ most recent meeting was a 1-1 draw in Tshwane in mid-December 2014. SuperSport opened the scoring through Bradley Grobler, while Rendani Ndou equalised for Rise and Shine.

Both teams come into the match in fine form: SuperSport have taken seven points from a possible nine in the league since the resumption of the league, including handing log leaders Kaizer Chiefs their first defeat of the season last midweek, while the Limpopo side won 2-1 at Swallows earlier this month for a seventh win from their last 11 league outings.

Kick-off is at 19:30 on Wednesday, February 25.
