Relegation fears deepen for Birds

Pretoria - University of Pretoria came from behind to hold Moroka Swallows to a 1-1 draw in an Absa Premiership encounter at Tuks Stadium on Tuesday.

Vuyisile Wana's first-half strike was cancelled out about Atusaye Nyondo five minutes into the second stanza. 

The point for the time being moves Swallows up to 15th spot while AmaTuks remain 10th. 

Craig Rosslee's troops now know a win for Free State Stars on Wednesday will leave the Soweto side with a lot to do if they were to avoid the drop.

Swallows showed their intentions early on with Boris Savic's header from a Vuyisile Wana corner-kick cleared off the line in the third minute before Lucky Baloyi saw his in-direct free-kick from 12 yards also cleared in the same fashion three minutes later.

Desperate for a win the Dube Birds continued to flock forward and found the opener through Wana with 23 minutes on the clock. 

AmaTuks defenders watched on as Sibyabonga Nomvethe threaded a precise ball to Wana who curled his left-footed shot past an outstretched Washington Arubi. 

The goal prompted a defensive approach by the visitors who sat back as AmaTuks looked for a way back into the clash. 

Nyondo guided his side-footed effort just wide just before the half-hour in what was the hosts first chance. 

The Malawi international would've been frustrated with his effort, but made up for his miss five minutes after the break. 

The AmaTuks forward latched onto a Geofrey Massa flick on before coolly slotting the ball into the back of the net for his seventh league goal of the season. 

Felix Obada and Geofrey Massa enjoyed late chances, but there was to be no more goals as the teams shared the spoils.
