Pitso backs Mphahlele captaincy

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has backed new captain Ramahlwe Mphahlele to lead the club with distinction.

The versatile defender was named skipper recently, replacing Alje Schut, who returned to Europe at the end of last season.

Mphahlele's first match wearing the armband was a 4-2 penalty loss against Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 in the quarter-finals.

"He has qualities. He has captained the junior teams. He has pedigree and leadership qualities and we are happy with the appointment of Rama," Mosimane told KickOff.

"He is not Schut, he is Rama. He is the right choice for us. The players have welcomed him and let's see if he can lead."

Mosimane has also appointed a team leadership core which will act as a committee of sorts to assist Mphahlele.

He added: "Our second captain is Denis Onyango and the third one is Thabo Nthethe. Thabo was captain at Celtic, Onyango has been captain for Uganda until now, so the leadership is there."
