Pirates suspend coach Leal

Johannesburg - Soweto soccer giants Orlando Pirates announced on their website on Monday that head coach Julio Cesar Leal had been suspended indefinitely.

"Orlando Pirates Football Club has with immediate effect suspended the coach, Mr Julio Cesar Leal," the club stated.

While embarking on a fact finding investigation into poor performances, the coach expressed that “he could not see his way forward” and offered the chairman “to do what is right for the club”.

Augusto Palacios, technical director of development, would assume the role of head coach on an interim basis.

The rest of the technical team would remain unchanged, Pirates said.

Since Leal took over at the beginning of the season, Pirates have won the MTN8 and the Telkom Knockout competitions.

He replaced Ruud Krol, who guided the team to three titles last season.

Leal came under severe scrutiny after Pirates failed to advance past the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

They went down 4-2 on aggregate to Angolan side Recreativo do Libolo earlier this month.

As usual Palacios finger again! Till nowt hey win every thing that was for grabs the MTN8 and the Telkom Knockout and they still running for the PSL I can's see nothing wrong with the coach. The problem at pirates is Augusto.

Only if Kaizer will learn from Irvin, you know... Chiefs coach should have been sent home before Leal, period!!!!

  • lmarima - 2012-03-12 13:30

Maybe they will start playing interesting football again, the coach was confused....good riddance

  • Raditshaba - 2012-03-12 14:14

They should have fired Tebogo Moloi as he is the one confusing players.

  • Moeketsi - 2012-03-12 14:33

...and that's how you deal with mediocrity, wish naturena and safa could learn a lesson here.

  • khums.ziba - 2012-03-12 14:49

Halleluja they must not suspend him but fire him period. We battled with the third division club because he didn''t set up his squard properly.

There was nothing wrong with Ruud Krol. I bet you NONE of the Pirates players can even hear Leal when he speaks, I know I never do when he's interviewed!

  • Nkululeko - 2012-03-12 16:26

I think the pirates technical team is confusing including Leal. They shouldnt have hired Leal at the first place any ways.

  • Sikhumbuzo Mngomezulu - 2012-03-12 17:05

Good move Pirates! Leal is a puppet coach. The job was too much for him. I hope they sack him before he cause serious damage to the buccaneers!
