Pirates end 2012 on a high

Durban - Orlando Pirates moved a point shy of Kaizer Chiefs at the top of the Absa Premiership table when they walked away with a comfortable 2-0 win over Golden Arrows at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

A stunner from Daine Klate in the first half of the game opened the encounter, while a 53rd minute header by Happy Jele secured the three points.

It was a strange start to the game with neither team able to implement a shot at goal in the opening 20 minutes of play and until beyond the opening goal.

Pirates were handed a 25th minute free-kick and it was Daine Klate who opted to take the set piece, despite Andile Jali being shown yellow by the referee for time wasting.

Klate got his own back, however, when he curled a stunner, from 30-yards out, which flew into the back of the net and left Pavels Steinbos rooted to the spot and still having not touched the ball.

On the 34th minute Ritus Krjauklis did well to clear away a Sifiso Myeni ball in the box, before Senzo Meyiwa confirmed why he received a recent call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad.

The shot-stopper did well to pull off an impressive one-handed save off a dangerous cross into the box just four minutes before the break.

Dillon Sheppard replaced Luyolo Mapolisa at the start of the second period, while Happy Jele extended the Buccaneers scoreline with a 53rd minute header.

Daine Klate turned from goalscorer to provider when he supplied a corner kick into the box which met Jele at the near post and put it in between the frame and Steinbos in goal.

Four minutes later the scoreline could have changed to 3-0, when Steinbos and Manyisa went one-on-one in the box, but it was the shot-stopper who came out on top.

Manqoba Mngqithi was quick to use all his substitutions, with his final one coming in the 72nd minute with Thanduyise Khuboni replacing Nhlanhla Zothwane.

Two minutes later Meyiwa was booked for time wasting but that didn’t damped his form as he pulled off a great 82nd minute save with a punch from Sheppard’s corner kick.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
