Pirates dismiss Khune talks

Johannesburg - Following speculation linking Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper and captain Itumeleng Khune with a possible move to Orlando Pirates, the Buccaneers’ Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mickey Modisane confirmed that the Happy People are not in talks with the industrious shot-stopper.

The Ventersdorp-born goal minder’s future with the Phefeni Glamour Boys is still uncertain at this stage as he is yet to pen a new deal with the Absa Premiership log leaders.

Khune’s current deal with Amakhosi is set to elapse at the end of the 2014/15 campaign and it was widely speculated that the “Spider Kid” is most likely to join their perennial rivals and fill the void left by the late Senzo Meyiwa.

Modisane told Sport24 in an exclusive interview on Friday that the Sea Robbers are unaware of the rumours spreading around about the two parties.

“Unfortunately that is just a malicious rumour being spread around,” said Modisane.

“We are unaware of those rumours as a team and this is the first time I’m hearing it from you.

“Orlando Pirates is a well-established and organised football club which is not driven by rumours.

“We are not in any talks with Itumeleng Khune.”

With the January Premier Soccer League (PSL) transfer window currently underway, Modisane hinted that club chairperson Irvin Khoza is yet to inform the club management about possible new recruits.

“At the moment I don’t know of any targeted players to be recruited by the team. I’m not saying that the club will not be signing in this transfer window. All I’m saying is all the signings would be handled by the club chairman.”

The Buccaneers are also rumoured to be chasing the signatures of the SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and Siyabonga Mpontshane of Platinum Stars, to boost their last line of defence.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
