Pirates beat Sundowns

Johannesburg - Pirates finish top in Diski Group B Orlando Pirates finished top of Group B after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 4-0 in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge at the Galeshwe Stadium on Sunday.

Both sides went into the match already through to the quarter-finals, but there was still a lot to play for as the winner was going to finish top of the group.

Pirates went ahead through the lively Thabo Rakhale, who netted in the 16th minute.

The young Buccaneers double the lead in the 41st minute via a spot kick, which was converted by the impressive Menzi Masuku, who sent keeper Tebogo Dlamini the wrong way.

Pirates were awarded the penalty after Motjeka Madisha brought down Sifiso Myeni.

Delightful pass

They added two more stunning goals in the second half, as Sundowns' talented duo Ntandoyenkosi Ngubane and Thamsanqa Masiya seemed to struggle in the heat. Even the presence of Luyolo Nomandela appears not enough to lift the young Brazilians.

Substitute Letsie Koapeng added the third with an emphatic finish in the 72nd minute after receiving a cross that Masuku allowed it to pass, for the striker to finish.

Another sub, Siphesihle Sangweni netted the fourth in the 80th minute after a great team play. The midfielder passed the ball to Masuku, who returned it with a delightful pass over the defence, for Sangweni to finish with a volley.

Pirates will face University of Pretoria in the quarter-finals - the Group B winners taking on the team that finished fourth in Group A.

Second placed Sundowns will meet Polokwane City, who finished third in the other group.
