Phala hails Igesund influence

Cape Town - Thuso Phala has lauded Gordon Igesund's influence on SuperSport United since he took over the reins two months ago.

Fresh from national duty, where his Bafana Bafana contract expired in August, Igesund replaced Cavin Johnson as head coach of Matsatsantsa, who were struggling to kick into gear this term.

They have since charged up to position eight in the league standings and were in a menacing mood this past weekend against cross-city rivals University of Pretoria, whom they beat 3-0 in their own backyard.

Phala has now credited the former Bafana coach for the side's change in fortunes, with the Telkom Knockout suddenly also looking a realistic target, having booked their place in the quarter-finals.

"I've seen a personal improvement but if you go through the whole team, you'll find that we are all playing well, and that is what counts the most, for the team to do well," the winger told The Sowetan.

"I've enjoyed the new game plan because it has given me more opportunities to go forward and create those chances. The new coach (Igesund) has brought a positive energy to the team, as the results have shown.

"He has given each of us the confidence to perform well and all the guys have reciprocated," he added.

SuperSport United will look to continue their great form in the Absa Premiership when they host Maritzburg United at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
