Pattison: The money's in SA

Johannesburg - New Bidvest Wits signing Matthew Pattison says salaries in the Premier Soccer League are often more impressive than those found in Europe.

The 25-year-old midfielder put pen to a deal with the Students last month following a frustrating season on the sidelines with now relegated Santos.

Pattison has also run out for the likes of Newcastle and Norwich during his career, but says if players are not in the English Premier League they will not be earning anything near to what players in South Africa make.

"People don't believe me but it is (now) better to come to SA financially," he told Business Day.

"That is the simple truth of it. To be honest, the UK is not as attractive as some people think.

"If you are not going to be playing in the English Premier League you will struggle big time. (English) clubs have overcompensated and they are struggling to keep up.

"Let me tell you now, SA is up there and really challenging a lot of European leagues when it comes to finances. SA can compete (with the best) which is really good for our football and the country."

I foresee a PSL meltdown similar to the European debt crisis if things continue as is. When the coporates are not doing well they will have to cup down on sponsorships (like Standard Bank did). This will mean clubs will not be able to pay the players' high salaries. Clubs will have to realease players before their lucrative contract end. We all know what the financial consequences of terminating a contract before expiry.......... Clubs will not be able to leave up to this....#Portsmouth FC#

Stop commenting about the money and start to produce good football and helping Bidvest Wits to greater heights

U cant really compare football based on Salary. Eg China, UAE , Russia and MLS pays better than many european leagues but are nowhere near in quality. Also You cant compare 1st division or no name bench players salaries in europe to our PSL becuase thats at the bottom of the earning bracket. What I cant wrap around my head is why SA teams fail dismally in Africa. Wealthier players and clubs, better infrsutructure. We just suck big time.We a freaken joke of a nation when it comes to football.

If you are semi talented yes you get a better salary here because in europe you get found out quickly and the bench becomes your berst friend. No pressure, huge salary, who needs europe for real?
