Parker backs Shabba captaincy

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker believes newly-appointed Amakhosi captain Siphiwe Tshabalala is the best choice to lead the club's title defence this season.

Tshabalala was elected as the club's new skipper by the recently formed captain's committee that consisted of himself, Siboniso Gaxa, Willard Katsande, Morgan Gould, Tsepo Masilela, Reneilwe Letsholoyane and Lorenzo Gordinho.

Parker is another of the senior players at Chiefs having spent the last four years at the club after moving from Dutch side FC Twente, and he is adamant 'Shabba' will make an excellent captain.

"Shabba's been with the club for eight or so years," he told KickOff.

"If I'm not mistaken, he's most capped player in the Kaizer Chiefs jersey in the current squad.

"His experience, as well as what he's done for the club, speaks for itself. His leadership qualities are not questionable. I am really happy for him and I certainly believe he will make a great captain."

Tshabalala's first task as captain will be to lead the side against Orlando Pirates in the annual Carling Black Label Cup at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, August 1.

Kick-off is at 15:30.
