Johannesburg - The Executive Committee of the Premier Soccer League have made the decision to observe the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations , meaning all domestic football will be put on hold for the duration of the tournament.
EXCO made the announcement on Thursday following a meeting with Dr Irvin Khoza, in which the PSL chairman was mandated to begin the process of finding a suitable long-term replacement for former PSL CEO Zola Majavu, who resigned from his role this week.
The African showpiece gets under way on the 12th of January next year, and runs for 23 days, with the final set to be contested on February 12.
"We took this decision in order to give the Africa Cup of Nations the respect it deserves and to ensure that there will be no counter attraction during the continental showpiece," Dr Khoza told the PSL's official website.
"Clubs are advised that there should be no organised events during the tournament except training matches. This break will enable players to recuperate following what has been a very congested fixture."
Meanwhile, incumbent COO Cambridge Mokanyane will temporarily fill the role vacated by Majavu, although Dr Khoza revealed the former has ruled himself out of taking up the position full-time.
EXCO also sent a request to the South African Football Association for an urgent Joint Liaison Committee meeting where they will discuss the up-coming Under-23 2012 Olympics qualifying tournament in Morocco and the U-20 COSAFA Championships.
