Johannesburg - The PSL promotional playoffs are set to be called off following a ruling in the South Gauteng High Court.
According to Kickoff’s website, Thanda Royal Zulu have been disputing a ruling by the PSL in the South Gauteng High Court in which all boycotted NFD matches at the beginning of the season will not be replayed, with no points to be awarded for those particular matches.
The court ruled in favour of Thanda, finding that the arbitration process was unfair and that the PSL should seek an independent arbitrator to run a new arbitrary process.
“This is what we went to court for, as Thanda, and we are very happy with the ruling,” said Thanda’s general manager, Thabani Gumede said.
“We went to court to ask the court to review and look at the decisions taken by arbitration, which was conducted unfairly.
“The courts have ruled that the arbitrator was really unfair and we must go to a proper arbitrator.
“We got what we want. It’s not like we were fighting anybody but fighting for what was fair.”
If the arbitrator finds conditions contradicting the PSL’s original ruling, it could mean that points may be awarded to affected teams or matches will be replayed, which would in turn greatly affect the final NFD standings.
This could mean that matches already played in the PSL promotional playoffs would be declared null and void as the teams currently contesting the matches may not even qualify for the playoffs once the revised log is released.
However, according to a tweet from the PSL’s spokesperson, Lux September, court proceedings are ongoing.
"Contrary to some speculation, we await outcome of today's High Court decision on the Thanda matter ...
"We (are) still in court."
