According to Soccer Laduma, a British journalist by the name Nick Harris, underwent a detailed study of how much money a player earns on an average basis in 34 leagues around the world.
In Africa, the PSL is the second highest paying league as a player, on average, earns around R11 000 per week. This figure is far inferior to the amount a player who plies their trade in the English Premiership where they earn on average R740 000 a week.
Algeria’s Ligue 1 players are the highest earners in Africa as a player can earn, on average, R23 000 per week.
“It was a selection of 34 leagues across all continents, 33 top flight plus the English Championship,” said Harris.
“They were picked because they were 'major', a WC team or because data was possible.”
Questioned on where the figures were coming from, Harris said, “from a combination of league guidance, clubs and financial accounts.”
It has also been reported that the average earnings of a PSL club is said to be around the figure of R52m a year.
