Niang shoots down Stars

Pretoria - SuperSport United began their 2013/14 Absa Premiership campaign in style as they came from a goal down to defeat 10-man Free State Stars 4-1 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Striker Mame Niang was the star man for Matsatsantsa, scoring two goals and providing two assists in a man of the match performance. The victory sees Cavin Johnson’s side go top of the Absa Premiership table.

Stars claimed the lead as early as the 11th minute when Mngezi Bobe’s cross-cum-shot from the left flank slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and found its way over the goal line.

At the other end of the field, Ea Lla Koto’s new ‘keeper Daniel Agyei had a couple of heart-in-mouth moments on his debut, though he also pulled off a good save to keep out a deflected David Mathebula shot.

Williams went someway to redeeming himself in the 33rd minute when he denied Stars striker Abdul Basit after a strong run forward from Reuben Thebakang.

Just before half time the visitors were reduced to 10 men when defender Soriola Gege was sent off for a second bookable offence, elbowing Mame Niang in the penalty area. The striker converted the subsequent penalty to make it 1-1 at the break.

Early in the second half, SuperSport went ahead for the first time when Bennett Chenene played a quick one-two with Niang before firing a left-footed shot from just outside the box into the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-1.

United substitute Sameehg Doutie made it 3-1 in the 85th minute, volleying home a fine goal from a Niang knock-down at a corner kick, and in injury time Niang himself completed a brace by beating Agyei to a long ball to complete the scoring at 4-1.
