Myeni: Early Wits goals sunk us

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates winger Sifiso Myeni said the Buccaneers lost their game early in the first half following their 2-0 defeat to Bidvest Wits on Tuesday.

The Students were too good for the Soweto giants in their Absa Premiership clash at the Bidvest Stadium thanks to a brace from Calvin Kadi in the first and 16th minutes of the match.

Myeni believed that the Clever Boys walked away victorious because they managed to utilise their golden opportunities in front of goal in the early stages of the match.

“Ntsunda” also credited Wits shot-stopper Moeneeb Josephs for standing his ground in the second half to keep the Sea Robbers at bay, despite their threatening attacking style of play.

“I think we lost the match in the first few minutes,” said Myeni.

“We conceded two soft goals in the early stages and that unsettled us.

“And for me and the rest of the team, we didn’t create much.

“We went one nil down and before we knew it we were two goals down.

“Coach (Eric Tinkler) told us at half-time that we must try and score in the first minute of the second half as they did in the first half, then we’ll come back into the game.

“We had chances to do that, but Moeneeb (Josephs) was always equal to the task.

“I think it was just a game of two halves, we did try to score, but it wasn’t to be.

“We lost to a Wits team that was willing to fight and they won the game in the first half.”

Despite losing the match, the Buccaneers remain in third spot in the standings due to their superior goal difference over the Clever Boys.

Pirates will switch their focus to the CAF Confederations Cup when they travel to Gabon for their clash against C.F Mounana on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 17:00 SA time.
