Mphela salary figure 'rubbish'

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns have dismissed as “absolute rubbish” the amount being reported as Katlego Mphela’s salary at the club, and stated that the figure suggested by Mphela’s agent Glyn Bynkin to the media of R300 000 a month is “crazy”, according to the club's official website.

Reports have suggested that Bynkin and Chiefs have said that Sundowns could save themselves R1.8-million over the remaining part of his contract if they release him immediately as opposed to the end of his contract in June.

Sundowns spokesperson Kabelo Mosito, said on Sunday that no player at Sundowns earns that kind of “crazy” salary. He said that Bynkin  was misleading the public, and at the same time destabilising Sundowns, by making such statements. “This is not the first time that Mphela’s agent has made insulting statements about Sundowns.  He did that when Mphela went AWOL at a critical time for Sundowns a few seasons ago, and the same happened when Siboniso Gaxa went AWOL before being released for an overseas deal.  We are therefore not surprised that Katlego has gone AWOL once more, even though Bynkin claims in reports that he does not know where the player is,” Mosito said.

“We have said it before, and we will repeat this:  Sundowns is committed to paying players good and above average salaries, but we do not pay crazy salaries – and all our players know this,” he added. “If agents want to inflate salaries allegedly paid by Sundowns in order to improve their bargaining position, it is totally unacceptable.”
