Mphahlele to wear Sundowns armband

Cape Town - Ramahlwe Mphahlele has emerged as the front runner to succeed Alje Schut as Mamelodi Sundowns captain for the 2015/16 Premiership season.

The former national Under-23 captain is a firm favourite with coach Pitso Mosimane and looks to be a permanent fixture in Sundowns' squad, having only missed one game last season.

Former captain Schut led the Brazilians to the league tile in the 2013/14 season as well as the Nedbank Cup triumph against Ajax last season, but Mphahlele remains confident he can fill the boots of the Dutch veteran.

When quizzed on the possibility of replacing Schut as club captain, Mphahlele told Football411: "If I am elected [for captaincy], I will obviously be honored and privileged, so I will lead.

"But it does not make any difference to me because at the end of the day, football is a collective sport.

"So it is a big responsibility, yes, but we already have a lot of captains in the team so to me, with or without the armband, I will continue to give my all and help the team where I can as long as I'm given the opportunity."
