Mokate the hero for Maritzburg

Durban - Substitute Mohau Mokate scored in stoppage time as Maritzburg United strengthened their Top 8 Absa Premiership push with an unlikely 1-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday.

The Urban Warriors dominated the game in Pietermaritzburg, but after being denied several times by the recalled Shuaib Walters, they watched all the points harshly stolen from them when Mokate nodded in a Deolin Mekoa right-side cross at the death.

While Maritzburg did have some possession in the opening half, it was Ajax that were by far the better team, doing everything but finding the back of the net.

The Capetonians had three fine chances to break the deadlock. The first was in the 23rd minute when Keagan Dolly stole possession in midfield and split the home defence with his low ball to Abbubaker Mobara, whose shot was excellently blocked by the diving Shuaib Walters.

On the half-hour there was another opening for the visitors, this time for Toriq Losper, but he again failed to beat the United keeper at the far post - the ball rebounding off the attacker and rolling tamely out of play after it was initially parried.

A third Ajax chance came four minutes from the break when Franklin Cale's left-side cross caught the United defence ball-watching, with Mosa Lebusa inexplicably nodding wide.

It was goalless at the break and straight after Dolly capitalized on more lackluster defending and found himself one-on-one with Walters, who blocked with his body from close range as the ball dribbled to safety.

Despite Maritzburg pressing thereafter, they failed to create any shots on goal until the final five minutes.

Before that, though, there were two big moments as Bantu Mzwakali was booked for simulation by the referee, much to the annoyance of the Ajax players.

They also felt aggrieved moments later, in the 83rd minute, when Walters somehow managed to tip a Lebusa header from a Cale free-kick onto the post, with some players feeling the ball may have crossed the line.

United's first shot on goal came when substitute Mokate rifled into the body of Anssi Jaakkola, followed by the late drama as United claimed the win.
