Pietermaritzburg - Following their hard fought 1-0 win over log leaders Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United midfielder Kwanda Mngonyama revealed they were well prepared for their tough encounter.

The Team of Choice handed the Phefeni Glamour Boys only their second Absa Premiership defeat of the season at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday, courtesy of Khumbulani Banda’s header.

Mngonyama hinted that the only significant aspect of their game plan was to close the space in midfield to hinder Amakhosi from playing their normal passing game.

“It was not an easy game at all,” insisted Mngonyama.

“We knew from the start that they will come at us very strong but we were desperate for those three points and we managed to get them all.

“We have worked and prepared during the week to close down the space in the middle.

“Our aim was to prevent them from playing their good passing game and it really helped a lot.

“I think it’s good for us to win and now we are looking forward to the next game and we’ll be more motivated by this win.”

A win for the Kwazulu Natal-based outfit moved them to the 9th spot on the log with only eight games remaining.

They will be looking to keep the momentum going when they face the struggling Platinum Stars away from home on Sunday (15:00 kick-off).
