Cape Town - Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo is set to be handed his PSL debut when they host Black Leopards on Wednesday night, according to the Pirates website.
"I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to play tonight,” said Mhlongo, whose only contribution in the first team to date was receiving a yellow card from the bench in the goalless draw with Kaizer Chiefs earlier this year.
“We need maximum points and I hope to play a key role in ensuring that happens. I have been at the club all my life and I have always dreamed to don the first team jersey - now the opportunity has presented itself.
“I would like to call on all the supporters to come in their numbers to rally behind the team. We wont be taking this game easily, three points is our target and nothing less.”
According to the Soccer Laduma website, Senzo Meyiwa, who has been in fine form for this season, will be on the bench against Leopards in order to give the 22-year-old some Mhlongo some vital experience, while Moeneeb Josephs seems to have fallen out of favour with the Pirates coaches.
Pirates' 1-0 home defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns on the weekend ended their title hopes, leaving them seven points adrift of leaders Kaizer Chiefs and four behind Platinum Stars heading into their penultimate league game on Wednesday.
Pirates close their PSL campaign on Saturday when they host Maritzburg United at Orlando Stadium.
