Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates ace Benni McCarthy says having faith in his own abilities inspired his double against Moroka Swallows at the weekend.
The South African legend fired home two second-half goals to ensure the Buccaneers' progression to the Telkom Knockout semi-finals following their last-eight victory over the Dube Birds.
McCarthy canceled out Luvhengo Mungomeni's opener with a stunning long-range free-kick in the 72nd minute before tucking home his second and the winner six minutes later.
And Bafana Bafana's all-time leading goalscorer, who now has five goals for Pirates since joining in the off-season, admits his self belief brought him through.
"We were one-nil down and had nothing to lose. I had one thing in mind, I was gonna go for it," he told the club's official website of his first goal.
"I have scored such goals while I was still at Celta Vigo and FC Porto as well as during my time in England. I just told myself 'Benni you can do it', and as they say, 'the rest is history!' "
McCarthy went on to praise the overall team performance on the night, adding: "We have a good group and when we were a goal down people thought we were dead and buried, but there is unity in this Orlando Pirates team.
"We work together because we win together and lose together. The kind of fighting spirit in the team is one where we die for each other.
"We have a never-say-die attitude as we have proved on Wednesday when we scored an equaliser against Swallows in the dying minutes of the match and again on Saturday."
