Cape Town - Orlando Pirates defender Thabo Matlaba says belief will be key if his side hope to catch Kaizer Chiefs in this season's Premiership title race.

The Buccaneers dispatched Polokwane City 3-1 on Saturday to leave themselves fourth in the standings, 12 points adrift of Amakhosi ahead of next Saturday's Soweto derby at the FNB Stadium.

And, although Pirates have their work cut out for them if they are to overhaul their bitter rivals at the top of the standings, Matlaba is refusing to give up hope.

"The coach told us that we must believe and win all out games," the left-back said after the game.

"Maybe we will catch Chiefs, I don't know, but we have to believe and know that each and every game is important."

Looking back over this weekend's win, Matlaba added: "We know that Polokwane City are a difficult team to play.

“They play good football and attack in numbers, but we wanted to catch them on the counter-attack - that's what our plan was (on Saturday)."
