Mashamaite: It is getting difficult

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs defender Tefu Mashamaite concedes that the journey to the Premiership title is far from being completed, despite the club producing a flawless season thus far.

Despite having won all six of their opening matches this term, Chiefs are just four points clear of Ajax Cape Town at the top of the Absa Premiership standings and Mashamaite does not think that his team-mates can afford to take anything for granted at this juncture.

It is also perhaps worth noting that the old foes Orlando Pirates have won their last three matches and are gathering swift momentum, as the season shifts into second gear. Amakhosi, head into the match against Maritzburg United on Saturday, September 27 knowing that only a victory will suffice.

"The quicker we get back on the horse the better. The training this week showed we are back on it. We attended a lecture in this morning. We can't afford to have our heads stuck in the past. This journey is still long," Mashamaite told journalists this week.

Chiefs are fresh off a MTN8 Final victory against Orlando Pirates last weekend and confidence levels are as high as they have been this term. However, Mashamaite knows better than most that the most testing part of the season is still to come. There are those who want Chiefs to falter and there are also those who expect them to falter; eventually.

"I'm happy for the team and for winning the MTN 8 trophy. We are doing well. All the games haven't been easy. The more we collect points the difficult it will becomes," admitted Mashamaite.

The Chiefs defender said Maritzburg were not to be trifled with this weekend, even though the fixture will take place at the FNB Stadium. The KwaZulu-Natal team are growing in confidence and they are proving to the local football fraternity just what they are capable of this term.

"He knows how to prepare the team," Mashamaite said of Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela.

"We have always played in close encounters against his teams. Our games against Maritzburg United are always close encounters."

Kick-off is at 20:15 on Saturday, September 27.
