Maritzburg relish underdog tag

Johannesburg - Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela will have a near full strength team available for when they face Kaizer Chiefs as the Absa Premiership resumes.

The Team of Choice have had a two week gap between their match against Mpumalanga Black Aces and the upcoming clash with AmaKhosi, and will be refreshed and ready to go against a Chiefs side that played in the MTN8 final.

Maritzburg will be without the injured duo of Ryan de Jongh and Deolin Mekoa for next Saturday’s outing at the FNB Stadium, but otherwise United have a clean bill of health.

United go into the match sitting in sixth position on the Absa Premiership standings, while Chiefs are the current log leaders.

As Maritzburg General Manager Quintin Jettoo says, United will as usual be underdogs for the game, but he does not think this will be a problem.

“We always go into the games against the big teams like Chiefs as underdogs,” Jettoo told Maritzburg’s website.

“But we have shown in the past that we can get results against the big sides, and so we will be out to upset the apple cart again.”

“For us, it’s important that the players do not get overawed by the occasion. We must treat it as just another game, it’s a league match, and three points are up for grabs,” Jettoo added.

Kick-off is scheduled for 20:15.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
