Maritzburg held by Celtic

Pietermaritzburg - Frank Mhango’s third goal in an as many PSL matches has secured a 1-1 draw for Bloemfontein Celtic away to Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.

Maritzburg had the first shot in anger, with Orlando Smeekes trying his hand from long range in the fifth minute and forcing Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignymeb into punching the ball over the crossbar.

Three minutes later the visitors’ Musa Nyatama tested Shu-Aib Walters from long range, while shortly thereafter Clayton Daniels put an effort wide of the target from a corner kick.

Both sides produced plenty of efforts at goal in the first half, though perhaps the best arrived in the 28th minute when Kurt Lentjies shot direct from a free kick and forced Tignyemb into a good parrying save.

After a first half in which neither side could find the back of the net, it took just over a minute of the second stanza for Maritzburg to break the deadlock. Bhongolwethu Jayiya crossed from a free kick and Thokozani Sekotlong powered home a header to make it 1-0.

Celtic looked for a quick reply and soon turned to attacking substitutions, sending on Lerato Lamola and Lyle Lakay from their bench, but they had to wait until the 77th minute to draw level, with Frank Mhango sending a right footed shot beyond the reach of Walters after good set-up work by Nyatama.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
