Cape Town - Former Orlando Pirates defender Brian Mathe says, if the decision were left to him, he would give the CAF Home-Based Player of the Year award to Oupa Manyisa.
The Buccaneers captain was nominated for the award, alongside teammates Felipe Ovono, Thamsanqa Gabuza and Kermit Erasmus, after a sensational run to the CAF Confederation Cup final, which they will play against Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia next month.
"Before even we start by saying that others should have been nominated, my view is that let's congratulate those that have been selected already and I think they deserve it," Mathe told Goal.
"When you look at Oupa Manyisa, he is the most consistent player. Not only in the African situation but you look at his contribution for Orlando Pirates in its entirety for me - it's a major achievement.
"He deserves to be there. If you ask me, if I was the judge, who I would give it to? I would immediately give it to Oupa Manyisa as the best player," Mathe said.
The Bucs legend also commented on Erasmus' continued exile from the Bafana Bafana setup.
"Kermit Erasmus, for me it is sad with the performance that he has been displaying for Orlando Pirates at home, and you look at him in Africa, he is not even in the national team. It's a sad thing, but he deserves to be there," Mathe added.
