Mandaza goal denies Chiefs

Johannesburg - Terrence Mandaza scored seven minutes into stoppage time Friday to snatch a 1-1 home draw for Maritzburg United against South African Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

A looping header from the Zimbabwean evaded the raised right hand of Chiefs and South Africa goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune to lift Maritzburg three places to second, five points behind Chiefs with both clubs having played eight games.

Chiefs went ahead midway through the opening half when Lehlohonolo Majoro punished slack marking to score at the second attempt before a large crowd at Harry Gwala stadium in KwaZulu-Natal capital Pietermaritzburg.

Guided by England-born former South Africa and Finland coach Stuart Baxter, Chiefs are seeking a first championship title since 2005 while perennial strugglers United are in unfamiliar territory after three wins and four draws.

Maritzburg could have collected all three points as another Zimbabwean, Cuthbert Malajila, rounded Khune in the final minute of regular time and his shot beat two defenders only to trickle just wide of the far post.
