Johannesburg - The replacement search is over for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) who on Thursday officially unveiled lawyer Zola Majavu as its new chief executive officer.
After months of speculation over previous incumbent Kjetil Siem's replacement, PSL chairman Irvin Khoza confirmed Majavu's appointment after Siem's tenure ended in May.
Majavu's initial three-year contract, extendable for a further two years, begins on July 1.
Siem is credited with having turned the PSL into a more professional organisation, particularly with the implementation of updated technology but one of the main criteria for his replacement, was that it had to be a black South African.
Majavu is no stranger to the PSL administration, having served as the league's prosecutor for disciplinary hearings since 2002.
He had tendered his resignation as the PSL prosecutor at the end of May.
Majavu has also served in the dispute resolution chamber of the world soccer body, FIFA.
"I am looking forward to the challenge ahead," said Majavu after his appointment had been confirmed.
"I have signed for three years which is renewable to five, and first need to sit down and analyse my job description.
"I have a lot that I need to do here and, fortunately, I am surrounded by capable people around me to help me in my tasks."
Majavu, who also runs his own law practice, said he was offered and accepted the post earlier in the week.
One of his immediate tasks will be to assist in finding a replacement prosecutor for the league.
"That position has yet to be filled because there are some transitional things that need to be sorted," said Majavu.
Former MTN executive Cambridge Mokonyane, who was also believed to be in the running for the top job, will work alongside Majavu as the PSL's chief operations officer.
Mokonyane replaced the long-serving Ronnie Schloss who had previously hinted at retirement from the soccer administration.
Schloss served as chief executive on an interim basis for the month of June, after Siem's departure.
"As the league, we are convinced that we have the right people to lead the administration of the PSL in both Zola and Cambridge," said Khoza.
