MTN8 semis top PSL agenda

Johannesburg - The Premier Soccer League (PSL) Executive Committee has called a meeting for Wednesday to discuss the MTN8 semi-finals.

According to the Soccer Laduma website, with the semi-final first-leg matches having been set to take place in midweek (20 and 21 August), it is thought that the PSL meeting is going to be around rescheduling the games for a weekend.

This is due to the fact that Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have been drawn to face one another in the two-legged affair.

Following the 2001 Ellis Park Stadium disaster - the worst sporting accident in South African history - it was suggested that a Soweto derby match not be held in midweek again.

The official report on the incident outlined the fact that acquiring tickets at the venue contributed to the disaster, as getting a ticket and into a seat before the start of the game in the short time period after arriving from work was an issue.

The delegation investigating the disaster also recommended that a match between Chiefs and Pirates, being one of the biggest sporting events in the country, should not be held in midweek to minimise the risks.
