Lekgwathi likely to lead Bucs

Johannesburg - He is yet to sign a new deal with the Soweto giants, but veteran Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi is likely to lead the side for the 13th season.

Pirates' Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mickey Modisane confirmed on Friday that the double-treble winning captain is still part of the team as things stand.

The long-serving versatile defender’s contract elapsed at the end of last month, along with fellow team-mate, Siyabonga Sangweni.

Modisane told Sport24 in an exclusive interview that Lekgwathi is currently involved with last season's Nedbank Cup winners in their pre-season training in Mpumalanga.

Modisane also emphasised that the former Bafana Bafana right-back remains the club captain.

“Lucky Lekgwathi is still part of the team as things stand,” said Modisane. “Lucky is training with the team as we speak. He is working hard at the pre-season sessions, just like every player. Lekgwathi remains our captain unless stated otherwise.”

“Phinda Mzala” joined the Sea Robbers from Ria Stars back in July 2002.

With speculation still spreading across the country regarding Ajax Cape Town winger, Keagan Dolly’s move to Pirates, Modisane revealed that the club is not chasing the 21-year-old player.

“All Pirates players are in camp at the moment,” Modisane emphasised

“This includes all players who are earmarked to be part of the squad next season. As for Keagan Dolly, up to this stage the club doesn’t know anything. Keagan is not part of Pirates targeted players at the moment. I don’t know what would happen tomorrow but for now he is not in our books. The coach will decide soon on a list of players he needs for next season.”
