Leaders Chiefs top SuperSport

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs restored their four-point lead at the top of the Absa Premiership with a 2-1 win over SuperSport United at a rainy Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday night.

Striker Lehlohonolo Majoro continued his excellent form with two goals, while Kermit Erasmus scored Matsatsantsa’s consolation strike.

Chiefs were the first team to settle into a rhythm and opened the scoring midway through the first half. Siphiwe Tshabalala provided a low cross from the left flank and Lehlohonolo Majoro was left unmarked, easily finding the back of the net from close range.

Yet the Soweto side’s lead lasted just 10 minutes, as SuperSport levelled just after the half hour mark. A ball played across the middle of the park was whipped into the back of the net by Kermit Erasmus, who beat goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune’s right hand.

The teams exchanged periods of dominance in the remainder of the first half and the opening phase of the second, though Matsatsantsa were hit by an ankle injury to striker Atusaye Nyondo, which saw him replaced by Thabiso Nkoana.

On 65 minutes Chiefs surged back in front through another well-taken goal by Majoro. On this occasion the forward fended off the attentions of Mor Diouf to slide home a diagonal long-ball from defender Eric Mathoho.

Though United pushed hard for an equaliser late in the game, it was Chiefs who came closest to adding to the score in the 88th minute when Bernard Parker hit the post and substitute Kingston Nkhatha just missed out on the rebound.
