Laffor stops the rot for Sundowns

Cape Town - Anthony Laffor eased some pressure on Pitso Mosimane with a late goal to secure a 3-2 win for Mamelodi Sundowns over Ajax Cape Town in an enthralling Absa Premiership clash at  the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.

Ajax came from behind on two occasions, but could not deny the Liberian as Sundowns ended their winless streak.

The game got off to a rather somber note with Prince Nxumalo ruled out of the clash moments before kick-off after the suffered a reported epileptic attack - this opened the way for MTN8 hero Nathan Paulse.

Sundowns started the game the brighter of the two side's as they hoped to catch the cup winners on honeymoon and after Keagan Dolly was superbly denied by former teammate Abbubaker Mobara , Modise found the opener with 21 minutes on the clock.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man - with the Brazilians desperate for a win, the midfield maestro put up his hand with a stunning free-kick which snuck past a fully stretched Anssi Jaakkola.

For all the quality at the one end of the pitch both teams were a tad fragile at the back and Pitso Mosimane would've been disappointed with his team's defending as Bantu Mzwakali drifted in at the back post to equalise from a Paulse flick on in the 37th minute.

Sundowns though went into the break a goal up courtesy of a Lolo own goal. So impressive at the weekend, the fullback was left embarrassed as he nodded Katlego Mashego's cross past his own keeper on the cusp of half-time.

Lolo wasn't left ruing his mistake for too long as Ajax leveled matters once again two minutes after the interval.

Paulse converting from 12 yards after Ramahlwe Mphahlele fouled Franklin Cale inside the area.

Sundowns pushed for the equaliser and were denied by the post and on the line for the second time in the match before Laffor struck home the winner.

The win moves Sundowns into the top eight while Ajax slip to fifth.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
