Cape Town - Maritzburg United defender Kwanda Mngonyama, who was the man of the match during the 1-0 victory against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday night, said he was delighted by the manner in which his team dismantled the Soweto giants.

When the second half of the season started, Chiefs were in a commanding position in the league standings.

However, during the past five matches, the Glamour Boys have struggled under pressure and Mngonyama is proud to have contributed to their troubles.

"They are on top of the table and we were able to derail what they call 'a Gautrain'," said Mngonyama after the potentially season-defining victory.

While it is true that the win has now enhanced Mamelodi Sundowns’ prospects of catching Chiefs at the top of the table, Mngonyama said the most critical factor at this juncture was helping his club secure as strong a finish as is possible this season.

The Team of Choice currently occupy ninth position in the league standings and the chances of moving into the top eight have improved significantly. Mngonyama said that this was ultimately the club's main priority.

"We stopped that train and we didn't stop the train for others but for our own benefit.

“From our side we need a top-eight position so we need these points more than them," added Mngonyama.

Maritzburg definitely had a plan ahead of the match against Chiefs and Mngonyama said he was satisfied with the manner in which it was executed.

"The coach told me I must organise and talk to the guys to press them high because I'm the one who sees everything alongside Virgil Vries at the back," he said.

"We did all of that and they guys did listen to me so it was a team effort."
