Cape Town - Injury-hit Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has surrendered the captain's armband to Tefu Mashamaite until he has re-established himself in the first team.

Khune made his return from injury in Amakhosi's 2-1 win over Township Rollers in the CAF Champions League at FNB Stadium on Saturday, but Mashamaite retained the captain's armband.

The goalkeeper last captained Chiefs in August last year and has been sidelined for some time with an ankle injury.

There were some questioning eyebrows raised when Khune started the game but was not named captain, however coach Stuart Baxter revealed it was the keeper who suggested Mashamaite should keep the captaincy.

"It was a nice touch by Itu in the squad meeting," Baxter said.

"He said he thinks that Mashamaite should retain the armband.

"We had a talk, me and Itu, and we agreed that this would be the best solution that Masha should continue with the captaincy until he is 100 per cent and back as a regular."
