Cape Town - Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Darren Keet says he turned down the
opportunity to join Mamelodi Sundowns even though the Brazilians offered
him a better salary than his current club, KV Kortrijk of Belgium, did.
The 25-year-old former youth international had yet to establish himself in the senior national set-up when he made the brave jump straight to Europe from Bidvest Wits three years ago.
His representative Shawn Bester has revealed that Sundowns were interested in the goal-minder, but the then 22-year-old was determined to go overseas.
"Before we went to Europe we had two offers tabled to us by Sundowns. Sudesh Singh and Trott Moloto and myself almost had a deal signed off on which actually money wise was a better deal than what Darren was going to get in Europe," Bester told the Supporter's Club.
"Trott (Moloto) actually said to me that if he leaves South Africa he was not going to be in the Bafana picture, which was strange to me because at that point he was already on the fringes of the Bafana team. But Darren had his heart set on Europe."
Keet has gone on to establish himself as Kortrijk's first-choice and has forced his way into the Bafana set-up, where he is currently deputising for captain Senzo Meyiwa.
