Igesund concerned over defence

Cape Town - Gordon Igesund has hinted that he is concerned at the state of his defence going into the start of the PSL season where they will have to cope with a couple of suspensions.

The unfamiliar centre-back partnership of Bongani Khumalo and Michael Boxall was put to the sword when SuperSport lost 4-0 to Crystal Palace on Friday.

Igesund stuck with the pair for the Ajax game on Sunday in order to speed up their integration into the squad as they might well be needed from the very start of the season.

“I was able to give Boxall half an hour to try and accelerate his fitting-in into the squad which is important for me because start of the season I have got two big suspensions in Clayton Daniels and (Grant) Kekana,” Igesund said.

Igesund was, however, pleased with the defensive improvements made in the game against Ajax, saying: “We were much better than we were the other night, especially in our first half performance.”

Khumalo is yet to sign with his former club but Igesund has made his intentions clear, stating on a number of occasions his wish to sign him.
