Hunt wants more from skipper

Johannesburg - Despite scoring the match-winning goal in Wits' 1-0 victory over the University of Pretoria, captain Sibusiso Vilakazi needs to do more, says his coach Gavin Hunt.

"Vilakazi could be so much better but it doesn't mean I don't like him,” said Hunt after Wednesday's game.

“I'll push his boundaries and see how far he can go. That's what we don't do enough in South Africa. After two or three games, we say: 'what a player!'.

“Let's go further than that. I think Vilkazi has got it, but there are certain aspects, like in all of us, where there is room for improvement.”

Wits were reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute of the Premiership match at Bidvest Stadium when Vilakazi stepped up to score the only goal of the encounter just minutes later.

Scoring goals, however, was just one of the roles the midfielder was expected to perform -- not only for his club but also in the national setup.

“He's got a lot more to do to make the national team although he's in the squad.

“He knows that. I've told him and I've told Gordon (Igesund). He's a young boy, but he's got to do more.

“He's scored a couple of goals in the last week, which is good from that perspective.”

Playing in the midfield meant Vilakazi had to provide more ball for his strikers, something which the coach believed the player was not yet doing adequately.

“He's got to be playing people 'in' more. When you play where he plays, you have to be playing people in - in and around the box and the final ball has to be better.

“But, he's 23 and if he works hard - and he has to work harder at his game in terms of when he doesn't have the ball - he'll get there.

“We just have to try and change the mentality here at the football clubs.”

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
